Nothing is Random.

Nothing is random, nor will anything ever be…not my beginning as a boy from Utah and Georgia, not my march into the Marine Corps, not the call to stand in a lodge of Prince Hall Freemasons, and not my baptism at St. George’s Church on November 2, when water will touch my forehead and I will bear witness, before friends and family, that I know in my heart of hearts I am a child of God.

Nor was it chance that I crossed paths with a global A-lister and formed a small team to help him and his wife launch a global brand on Valentine’s Day, 2020…a movement founded on the power of “coupledom.” Nor that COVID descended, forcing the world to reckon with fragility and pushing me toward ethical hacking…searching for order in chaos. VU Venture Partners opened the door to venture capital and frontier tech; Comcast widened the corridor through my time at Xfinity Creative; producing and promoting the NYU AI Masterclass sharpened my tools; and up until Friday last week, Subvrsive taught me that technology and story are one.

Even electrons, supposedly the paragons of unpredictability, are tame and obsequious little creatures rushing at the speed of light to precisely where they are meant to go. And so too with the arc of my life: every meeting, every test, every baptism of fire and of water.

And yet there is a wonderful anarchy: I chose the Corps, I chose the craft of hacking, I chose the covenant of baptism. The snowflake falls as it will, and I fell here…to this work, this purpose. So, until I find my next dream job in advertising, I’ve signed on as a Strategic Partner at VU to build the NYC, DC, and Defense Tech Hubs. From that vantage the pattern expands…too large for one moment’s comprehension, but unmistakable when you stand back.

How can it be that if nothing is random, I still feel free? Because nothing is predetermined…it is determined, was determined, will be determined. Time itself is the veil. But when you stand back you see the canvas whole, and you know: the universe is finished and beautiful.

All rivers run full to the sea. Those who are apart are brought together. The lost are redeemed. The dead come back to life. The perfectly blue days continue, immobile and accessible.

Justice is not a promise of what was or what will be.

Justice is.
