People always ask golfers what their favorite course is. Most expect an impressive answer — Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Augusta.

But when I think about the courses that shaped me, my mind goes somewhere else. A municipal course on Coronado Island everyone called the poor man's Pebble Beach. Looking back, I don't remember many of my scores there. I remember who I was — young, convinced I had life mostly figured out.

Sometimes I think we spend too much of our lives chasing famous places when what we're really looking for is familiar faces.
