Your rangefinder says 142. Your gut says it's playing more like 150. Which one wins?

Usually the eye is compensating for something the number can't measure: uphill or downhill lie, wind you can feel but the app can't, or a green that slopes away and needs to land short. Rangefinders are excellent at distance. They're blind to everything else.

The rule of thumb: trust the number for the flat, no-wind version of the shot. Then adjust with your eye for everything the number left out.
